What does Steuer-ID mean?
The Steuer-ID (steuerliche Identifikationsnummer) is an 11-digit number that identifies you to the German tax system for life. You never apply for it: your first Anmeldung triggers it, and the letter arrives in 2-4 weeks. Your employer needs it, otherwise you are taxed in class VI.
Key facts
| Format | 11 digits |
| How you get it | Automatically after your first Anmeldung |
| Arrives | Usually within 2-4 weeks |
| Not the same as | The Steuernummer, which freelancers use on invoices |
What to do
- Give it to your employer as soon as it arrives.
- Find it later on any payslip, your Lohnsteuerbescheinigung or a Steuerbescheid.
- Lost it? Request it again free at bzst.de (sent by letter) or ask your Finanzamt in person with your passport.
Worth knowing
Without the Steuer-ID your employer must withhold tax in class VI, the most expensive class. The overpaid tax comes back through your tax return.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Steuer-ID the same as the Steuernummer?
No. The Steuer-ID is your personal lifelong number. The Steuernummer is assigned by your local Finanzamt, mainly for tax returns of freelancers and businesses, and can change when you move.
How do I find my Steuer-ID?
On your payslip, your Lohnsteuerbescheinigung or any Steuerbescheid. If you have none of these, request it free at bzst.de; it is sent by post.
