How to cancel any contract in Germany (r/germany's eternal question)

Notice periods per contract type, the online cancellation button law, Kündigung letter template, special termination rights and proof-of-delivery tactics.

Last updated: July 13, 2026

How do you cancel a contract in Germany?

Cancel in text form (letter or the legally mandatory online Kündigungsbutton), before the notice deadline, with proof of delivery. Since 2022, consumer contracts renew only month-to-month after their initial term with one month notice, and every company selling online must offer a one-click cancellation button. Special termination rights open early exits at price hikes and relocations.

The 2022 law that changed everything (Germans still don't believe it)

  • Initial terms up to 24 months remain legal
  • BUT auto-renewal is now month-by-month with ONE month notice (the old "miss the window, locked another year" trap is dead for consumer contracts)
  • Every online-sellable subscription MUST have a "Verträge hier kündigen" button - if a company hides it, your emailed cancellation still counts and you can report them

The bulletproof cancellation method

  1. Find the exact legal name + customer number
  2. Use the Kündigungsbutton where it exists (screenshot the confirmation!) or send a dated letter: "Hiermit kündige ich meinen Vertrag [Nr.] fristgerecht zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt. Bitte bestätigen Sie schriftlich." - that one sentence is the whole template
  3. Proof matters: Einschreiben (registered letter) for high-stakes, email with read receipt acceptable since text-form reform
  4. No confirmation within 2 weeks → follow up citing the original date - the burden is on them once you prove dispatch

Special termination rights (Sonderkündigungsrecht) - your early exits

Price increases (any contract - cancel to the effective date), moving where the service can't follow (internet!), service failures (documented speed shortfalls), death/long-term relocation abroad for gyms and clubs (with proof: Abmeldung ends most consumer contracts - leaving guide).

Frequently asked questions

Company claims the letter never arrived.

Einschreiben receipt = game over for them. This is why €4 registered post beats €0 email for contracts worth hundreds.

Can they demand phone cancellation?

No - text form is always sufficient by law; phone-only cancellation requirements are void.

Cancellation services (Volders-class)?

They work but the button law made most of them unnecessary - DIY is 5 minutes now.

I'm leaving Germany - does that void everything?

Not automatically: Abmeldung + proof unlocks special termination for most services; do it BEFORE leaving (leaving guide).

The gym says the online button "doesn't apply" to them.

It applies to every consumer contract concludable online. Cancel by email citing §312k BGB, screenshot everything.
