What does Abmeldung mean?
Abmeldung is deregistering your address when you move out and do not take a new one in Germany. You must do it within two weeks after moving out, or up to one week before. It is free and most cities accept it by post. The Abmeldebestätigung you receive lets you cancel contracts and the broadcasting fee.

What to do
- Fill in the 'Abmeldung bei der Meldebehörde' form from your city's website.
- Send it by post with a copy of your passport, or hand it in at the Bürgeramt.
- Use the Abmeldebestätigung to cancel the Rundfunkbeitrag, phone and internet contracts.
- Non-EU citizens: check what leaving means for your residence permit first.
Worth knowing
Moving to another German city is not an Abmeldung: you just register at the new address.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do the Abmeldung from abroad?
Yes. Send the form by post with a copy of your passport and your actual move-out date. The office can backdate it, though a late Abmeldung is technically fineable.
Is the Abmeldung free?
Yes, everywhere in Germany, in person or by post.
