Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
Landlord's move-in confirmation
Last updated: September 28, 2026
What does Wohnungsgeberbestätigung mean?
The Wohnungsgeberbestätigung is a written confirmation from your landlord (or main tenant, if you sublet) that you moved in. You need it for your Anmeldung. The landlord must provide it within the 2-week registration period. It is not needed when you deregister.
Key facts
| Required for | Anmeldung only, not Abmeldung |
| Landlord's deadline | Within the 2-week registration period (§19 BMG) |
| Contents | Landlord, owner, move-in date, address, residents |
| Fake confirmation (Scheinanmeldung) | Fine up to €50,000 |
What to do
- Ask your landlord or main tenant for it when you sign the contract; many use the standard form from the city website.
- Check it contains: the landlord's name and address (and the owner's, if different), your move-in date, the flat's address and the names of everyone moving in.
- Bring it to the Anmeldung together with your passport.
- If the landlord refuses, tell the Bürgeramt; landlords are legally obliged to provide it.
Worth knowing
Anyone offering to 'sell' you an address for the Anmeldung is committing an offence, and so are you if you use it. Legitimate short-term options are furnished rentals and sublets with a proper confirmation.
Frequently asked questions
