ELSTER in English: surviving the official tax portal
The official free tax portal walkthrough: certificate registration, which forms (ESt 1 A, Anlage N), field-by-field translations and when paid apps beat it.

How do you file German taxes with ELSTER?
ELSTER is the free official tax portal: register with your tax ID (activation code arrives by POST in about a week), then file the ESt 1 A main form plus Anlage N for employment income. It is German-only and form-logic dense - budget 2-4 hours the first year, or pay €35-40 for an English interview-style app instead.
What this guide covers
Register FIRST, weeks before the deadline
- elster.de → Benutzerkonto erstellen → identify with your Steuer-ID
- The activation code letter arrives by post (5-10 days) - this is the step that kills deadline-day plans
- Activate, download your certificate file (.pfx) - it IS your login, back it up
- Mein ELSTER → Einkommensteuererklärung → the form set for your year
The forms decoded (employee edition)
| Form | What |
|---|---|
| ESt 1 A (Hauptvordruck) | You: address, IBAN for the refund, tax ID |
| Anlage N | Employment: copy numbers from your Lohnsteuerbescheinigung (the year-end certificate from your employer) box-by-matching-box |
| Anlage N - Werbungskosten section | The refund engine: commute km, home office days, equipment, courses (tax guide's deduction list) |
| Anlage Vorsorgeaufwand | Insurance contributions (mostly pre-filled from Kasse reporting) |
| Anlage Sonderausgaben | Donations, church tax paid |
| Anlage AUS/WA-ESt | Foreign income/arrival-year cases - where expats need care (Progressionsvorbehalt) |
Freelancers add Anlage S/G + EÜR (freelancing guide - and honestly, a Steuerberater).
The tricks that save hours
- Belegabruf (pre-filled data retrieval): activate it - employer, insurance and pension data auto-populate (arrives mid-March, don't file before)
- Every field has a "?" - paste the German into a translator; the explanations are actually good
- Save constantly (Zwischenspeichern); sessions time out
- Last year's return imports into next year - year 2 takes 45 minutes
- The final Prüfung step lists errors clickably - green check, submit, done. The Bescheid (assessment) arrives in 4-10 weeks; CHECK it against your filing before celebrating
ELSTER vs the €35 apps)
ELSTER wins: €0, all cases supported, freelancer forms. Apps win: English, interview-not-forms, deduction prompting you'd miss, 45 minutes total. Most employed expats net MORE refund via app prompting than they save in fees. Complex cases (arrival year, foreign income, freelance): Steuerberater territory anyway (tax guide).
Frequently asked questions
Is there literally no English mode?
None. The portal is German-only by design; that's the market gap apps fill.
Mac/mobile?
Fully web-based now; the old ElsterFormular software is retired.
I filed wrong - disaster?
File a correction (Berichtigung) or object to the Bescheid within one month (Einspruch) - both routine.
Can my spouse and I file together in ELSTER?
Zusammenveranlagung is one joint return - one certificate holder files for both.
